Here in the
United States we are mourning the senseless destruction and loss of life
that was wrought by those of perverse logic and belief. As a country
we will not cower, we will not hide, but we will rise to the challenge.
Though the United States is home to a myriad of cultures, beliefs, and
political views, we are all one in our determination to end such senseless
violence. Today the “Sleeping Giant” has once again been woken; this
time to confront terrorism.
Little did these terrorists
realize that they have secured their own demise and that of their cause, as
they have also wrought the ire of the civilized and free world. The World
Trade Center was a place of international trade and commerce, where people
from all over the world worked together ... and now died together. With the
vast majority of the world at our side, together in purpose, we can now
glimpse the possible end of such terrorism.
Terrorism is not logical,
in fact, the more horrific the destruction and loss of life, the greater the
resolve is of others to end it, and the less anyone could justify it. Even
the greatest of all sophists could not come up with an argument to support
such heinousness. Hopefully those of us who have striven to improve the
world via the open and intelligent discussion of Science, can help the world
in becoming a free and peaceful realm where we can all call ourselves
brothers and sisters of humanity, no matter where we live, the color of our
skin, or the way that we honor God.
We in the scientific sphere
often forget the emotional and religious nature of man, but just as the
religious have come to realize how intricate and beautiful Science is, we
scientists have also come to realize that there must be an artist behind
such greatness. Hopefully the combination of knowledge, logic, and faith,
can bring the world together rather than its continued fracturing.
Tonight and all nights,
hold your loved ones close and remember that the reason we strive to make
a better tomorrow is right there in our arms.
